MCSO deputies arrived at the scene and began a rapid search of the area. At approximately 11:29 a.m., Maxwell was located in the Clinton River, near his home. First responders pulled the toddler from the water and immediately began life-saving efforts before transporting him to a nearby hospital.

Despite the emergency intervention, Maxwell was pronounced dead later in the afternoon.

In an official statement, MCSO Public Information Officer Jennifer Putney expressed condolences on behalf of the department: “The thoughts and prayers of the MCSO go out to the family and friends of the young child.”

An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing. Authorities have not released further details about how the child may have entered the river.

The tragedy serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of water safety, particularly for families living near rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water. Grief counselors and support services are being made available to the family and local community.
