BROOKLYN, NY — Anne Burrell, the spirited and beloved celebrity chef best known for hosting Worst Cooks in America, has died at the age of 55. Burrell passed away on Tuesday, June 17, at her home in Brooklyn, New York, her family confirmed in a statement.
“Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,” the statement read. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions across the world. Though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and boundless love remain eternal.”
A prominent figure on the Food Network, Burrell rose to national fame as a vibrant sous chef on Iron Chef America before becoming the tough-love host of Worst Cooks in America. Known for her fiery red hair, larger-than-life personality, and passion for teaching, Burrell inspired countless fans with her humor, skill, and unapologetic authenticity.
Burrell trained at the Culinary Institute of America and honed her craft in prestigious kitchens in both New York and Italy. Her love for rustic Italian cuisine and bold flavors was reflected not only in her television career but also in her cookbooks and restaurant ventures.
Outside the kitchen, Burrell’s personal life also drew admiration. She met her husband, Stuart Claxton, on the dating app Bumble in 2018. The couple quickly bonded, got engaged in 2020, and were married in a fairy-tale ceremony in October 2021. “Everything was magical,” Burrell said in a post-wedding interview with friend and fellow chef Rachael Ray, who served as a bridesmaid.
The two shared a joyful life together, with Claxton once describing their marriage as “a whole adventure, but very lovely at the same time.” The couple lived together in Brooklyn, where Burrell passed away.
Burrell is survived by her husband Stuart Claxton; children Isabella, Amelia, and Nicolas; Claxton’s son Javier; her mother Marlene; sister Jane; and brother Ben.
In addition to her culinary accomplishments, Anne Burrell will be remembered for her infectious joy, signature phrases, and unwavering dedication to making the kitchen a welcoming place for all.
