Authorities are investigating a tragic incident after a body was found hanging near the South Memorial Bridge in Racine early Friday morning.
According to the Racine Police Department, officers were dispatched to the area of Memorial Drive between 6th Street and 9th Street, near the railroad tracks, following reports of a person seen hanging off the rail infrastructure.
When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they confirmed the discovery of a deceased female victim, who was pronounced dead on arrival. The exact time of discovery has not been publicly confirmed, but witnesses reported a significant police presence in the area beginning shortly after sunrise.
Due to the severity of the incident and its location near an active rail corridor, authorities closed off 6th Street in both directions to allow for the safe removal of the body and the initial stages of the investigation. Traffic delays and reroutes are in effect, and officials are asking the public to avoid the area.
At this time, no foul play has been confirmed, and the incident is being treated as an apparent suicide pending further investigation and autopsy results. The identity of the victim has not been publicly released, pending notification of next of kin.
